It's Phil, Not Genesis; Deal With It!
Review Score:

(8/10)
I promise to review this cd, but first some significant background:
Ever since Phil Collins' first foray into his solo career way back in 1981, Genesis fans have been rolling their eyes, sometimes screaming "Oh no!" or "Sellout!" and praying that he just concentrate on the seminal band: "Please Phil, come back to us," they cry. I was one of those back in the early years. I had some degree of hope that Peter Gabriel's departure was perhaps only temporary (how naive of me to even think it).
But lo and behold, Genesis quickly became just as commercial as Phil, and all hope was lost.
Of course, the world has matured since then and now we can appreciate both Phil's solo work as well as his collaborations with Anthony Banks and Michael Rutherford, except for the horrible miscue "Illegal Alien," perhaps the stupidest song ever from Atlantic Records.
So much for history; how about "Dance Into the Light?" The title track is upbeat, uptempo, and really a terrific pop tune. Nathan East's bass playing is locked in wonderfully with Phil's solid drumming. People forget that Collins is an accomplished man behind the drum kit. His snare drum is clear and makes a statement, like on "Love Police." Once you get into the flow of the CD, it takes you exactly where you want to go in Phillandia. For those concerned fans, if you truly want hardcore Genesis edge, then stick with 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,' or get yourself the most recent Peter Gabriel DVD, 'Growing Up.'
