Pink Floyd

A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

A prog rock masterpiece to be detailed with headphones

Those who compare Pink Floyd without Roger Waters to the Chicago Bulls without Michael Jordan are way off. Granted that lyrics since his departure were never again what they were before, musically speaking Pink Floyd continued to be very well and alive thereafter, and a proof of it is this album, as well as portions of The Division Bell that followed it a few years after.

From the brilliant opening instrumental ("Signs Of Life"), the album moves into the powerful "Learning To Fly" and a string of tracks that prove that David Gilmour's guitar can bring just as much life to the 3+ decade-old band as it did back in their prime time. If you doubt this, the closing "Sorrow" should be helpful. All in all, the album has a very spatial feel to it, deserving to be listened to with headphones in order to disect the layers and layers of sound that it has to offer beyond the casual listening stage.

I highly recommend it as the "new" Pink Floyd sound (of the late eighties and early nineties), more focused on the music than the lyrics, yet every bit as brilliant and powerful.
