Strange...yet it feels so...unique.
Review Score:

(8/10)
I never thought that Pink Floyd could make something good after the Split. Roger Waters, the musical genious behind everything left and did a most stunning soloalbum "The Pros&Cons of Hitchhiking", leaving Gilmour and Company with a new and different Pink Floyd. A Pink Floyd not pretending to be the old one. In fact, they never had a chance, because there isnt anyone in the world close to Waters sarcastic, self-ironic and beautiful style. So, with that in mind, they made a Next Generation Pink Floyd.
A Momentary Lapse of Reason is, although not perfect, a very original and good album. Its very atmospheric, blue and melancholy, yet keeping the rock and alternative style they were known for. Some songs are radiofriendly, and earned them quite some radioplay, like "Learning to Fly", while others are downright strange, and have no place on a Commercial Radio Channel, unless you wanna lift some eyebrows. The three best songs on the album: "On the Turning Away" with its almost anthem like chorus, "Yet Another Movie" with a haunting style and sound and "Sorrow" which sounds like some dark and sad Rocker, heavily on the guitars but keeping a strange and fascinating sound.
The rest of the songs are good, except the very unnecessary "A New Machine" which keeps the record a bit disturbing. Still, it is part of what makes this record so unique. The next album "The Divison Bell" makes Pink Floyd fully commercial, losing some of the individuality but winning a lot on the ears. Yet, A Momentary Lapse of Reason is a proof that David Gilmour and Company didnt need Roger Waters to make a good album. Its a shame that more people doesnt see this record for what it is. They could never make it sound like the old Pink Floyd, and they should be given credits for having guts to try something new, yet staying away from cookiecutting.
Yes, A Momentary Lapse of Reason could have used some trimming, replacing some songs with better ones, but all in all, its a good album which I recommend to most.
