A matter of perspective.

I love this album. I am also not a Pink Floyd purist. I only started listening to Pink Floyd recently, though I have known about them all my life. I am a Nine Inch Nails fan, and that is what attracted me to PF, becasue they influence NIN and alot of other bands I listen to. I am a huge fan of hard edge electronic music. I like Pink Floyd because they incorporated electronics onto thier sound in a way that was quite ahead of it's time. Adding electronic texture to real songs, instead of Kraftwerk style blips and bloops of the period. My motivation for liking this album has nothing to do with how it plays into other Floyd work. In fact I cannot stand "The Wall". I have no need for fancy guitar work, it's annoying. I find traditional rock music very, very boring. Song like "Dogs of War" are great precursors to later innovations by other bands. That is my attraction. When viewed in the context of what would later become of Floyd's influence, I think this album deftly illustrates the great things that Floyd would later pass on to others. If you enjoy bands like NIN, Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson (pre Mech. Anim.) you will find things about this album cofortably familiar. If you walk around with "The Wall" shirts and think that "Learning To Fly" is just to pop-ish, then this may not be the album for you, of course that being the case, you already know this.
