Vastly Underrated
Review Score:

(10/10)
First off, for those of you who don't know, this is the first Pink Floyd album that was done entirely without Roger Waters. Just by listening to the music it is obvious.
However, many purists call this "David Gilmour's solo album", which is of course not true at all. While it may be very different from Roger's self-indulgent "The Final Cut"(which is more of a Waters solo album than this is a Gilmour solo album), it does not jump from one extreme to the other.
The album starts with the ambient, relaxed "Signs of Life" and seamlessly leads into the ever popular "Learning to Fly".
The real stand out here is "On The Turning Away", however. True to the Pink Floyd spirit, it is a beautiful song about social class and how it needs to be reformed. And of course Gilmour offers his legendary guitar skills to the song.
"Yet Another Movie" is a also a great song. Very dark and somewhat mysterious, with the ambience that runs freely in the album.
"Terminal Frost" is a good instrumental, but it does end up sounding like a collaboration with Kenny G.
"Sorrow", is a very dark song that has pretty good lyrics, considering Roger is gone. It's also a great finisher for the album, though it does get more attention than it deserves.
This album isn't all good, though. Here are some of the bad things:
With Roger gone, most of the lyrical genius is also gone, and it is very obvious in most songs(with one or two exceptions).
Some songs do sound a little too like pop music.
Rick Wright didn't contribute to any of the songs, as he joined the band again after most of the recording was aleady done.
The bottom line: If you don't have it totally ingrained that Pink Floyd '87 is just a Gilmour solo effort, then this album is a great addition to your collection. It is the third Floyd Album I bought, and believe me, I haven't ever regretted it.
