I really wanted to like this album, and I do, but not the way I like most Pink Floyd albums. This album was put together for a couple reasons:
1. As a way for the rest of the band to tell Roger Waters that they can work without him.
2. David Gilmore's solo career was going nowhere.
3. The record execs wanted a new Pink Floyd album.

From all accounts, that I have read, the execs did not like what the band originally put together, so they brought in writers to help make the album more "Floydian." That was probably a mistake as what was originally put together would probably have been better.

To those people who had this album as their first exposure to Pink Floyd, you can expect much better things with their next album or with their earlier work. Try Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here.

All this being said, it is not a bad album and no one should be embarrassed to own it or have it as part of his or her collection. Some of the songs are pretty good and enjoyable. My recommendation would be to buy this album used or get it on sale, don't buy it at full price.
