Pink Floyd

A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

Surprisingly Reasonable Though Lacking

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
I bought this album recently after reading some of the reviews posted here. I just had to find out for myself about this album since I've enjoyed most of the music from the Waters era of Floyd and was curious about the Gilmore incarnation of the band. Truthfully, this album would be considered a very good David Gilmore solo album, but because it bears the Floyd moniker I couldn't help but notice how some of the mediocre tracks ("Dogs of War", "One Slip", and "Yet Another Movie") could have benefited from Roger Waters' more poetic lyrics. That having been said, there are some rather outstanding songs on this album including "On Turning Away," "Learning to Fly" and "Sorrow." Thus, this album is not as horrible as some would make it out to be. I get the feeling that Gilmore was trying too hard find the right balance between his own style of songwriting and that of classic Floyd. The result is a somewhat flawed but listenable album. Even the tiresome "New Machine," "Terminal Frost," New Machine 2" medley manages to have some barely entertaining moments that might prevent one from skipping to "Sorrow." The album does have its frustrating moments, but it is worth a listen. Whether or not it's worth repeated listening is somewhat debatable. I for one will have to see how much it grows on me.
