Floyd-Pop
Review Score:

(10/10)
For all the people complaining that 'this isn't floyd', then I ask you: What is? Their peak as a band was 71-75 (Meddle - Wish You Were Here), but that still leaves 67-70 and 76-94. Their sound and style has changed so much over the 27 years that they were active that it's nigh impossible to find a floyd album that you don't like. Three 'frontmen' (Barrett, Waters, Gilmour) with radically different songwriting skills and talents - same band. Amazing.
This is a pop album, that is true. Gilmour, free to do what he wants for the first time in years, soars on this album and gives it a 'floydian-pop' feel. It's more of a Floyd album than 'The Final Cut' is, and at the same time it's that albums complete opposite. Waters songwriting talents are missed here - Some of Gilmours lyrics really suck. On The Turning Away's lyrics are far too blunt and clichéd for my liking, but it features amazing arrangements with an absolutely killer guitar solo.
Speaking of guitars, if you even have a marginal interest in them this is the album for you. Gilmour's guitar soars like a phoenix from the ashes of 'the final cut' and is undeniably powerful at times. Some of the best solos i've ever heard are present on this album, with On The Turning Away, Yet Another Movie, and Sorrow being the best of them. The A New Machine - Terminal Frost medley is quite enjoyable, although it is my least favourite moment of the album. The Dogs of War would be almost completely forgettable if it weren't for Gilmours angry vocals and the incredible sax solo that emerges midway through the song.
Musically, this album is a triumph, but it is primarily a floyd-pop album. I highly recommend this album to anybody, floyd-fan or not. The band could survive without someone as influential as Waters, and this album proves it.
