Pink Floyd

A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

A childhood classic

There are very few cds that I own today that I grew up on during my adolescent years. One of those cds is Pink Floyd's post-Roger Waters album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". Back in my awkward teenage years, I worshipped the ground my older brother walked on. I thought he had the coolest taste in music (before I discovered punk music in my latter years in high school). My brother would play a lot of Pink Floyd's music. One of the cds he listened to a lot and exposed me to was "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". I had never heard such an amazing sound. This album may not be "Dark Side of the Moon" or "The Wall" but it certainly left quite an impact on me that the other albums didn't have in some subconscious way. The songs on "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" that really stood out with me was the anthemic "Learning to Fly" and the epic "On the Turning Away". The songs were incredibly catchy. My only problem with "On the Turning Away" is the ridiculously long guitar solo but the same can be said about most of Pink Floyd's music, the pompous, self-indulgent guitar solos. Otherwise, I love "On the Turning Away". It is one of the most moving songs that I had ever heard in my life and it still is to this very day. The poignant lyrics and the haunting melodies is what I love most about the song. Don't get me wrong I do think Dave Gilmour is a great guitarist but I sometimes I just don't care for guitar solos that just goes on and on like his does. The lyrics tends to be pompous and self-righteous but at the same time they certainly don't sound dated, especially in this current day and age (especially the song "Dogs of War"). "Signs of Life" is a beautiful opener for this album. I thought it was a good way to set off the tone for the rest of the album. I thought that Dave Gilmour did a really good job as the lead vocalist on all of the songs. "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" may not be "The Wall" or "Dark Side of the Moon" but it certainly has a place in my heart as one of my favorite albums from my childhood.
