Pink Floyd

The Division Bell

Dehydrated Floyd blessedly bereft of Roger's drama-queenism

Remember those old Floydian noodle-fests like ATOM HEART BOREDOM and UMMABUMMER? Me neither. They were displaced long ago in my neurons by reissued bossa-nova records and what a relief that was. One would think that the CD format would be especially conducive to yet more overextended Floydian wankadelia. But luckily, Gilmour & Wright opted for concision instead and the result is a record that contains only 1 crappy track (GREAT DAY FOR FREEDOM).

Saxophonist Dick Parry provides the brief highlight. On WEARING THE INSIDE OUT. I found Parry's subtle low-key saxmanship to be downright heartrending. Which is more than I can say for everything else. What you've got here is first-rate ear-candy with half a soul. But better for it to be that than to be first-rate ear-candy with no soul whatsoever. (Which is how I define stuff like AJA and ABBEY ROAD.)
