The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn

The Essential Pink Floyd Album

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
There is no denying that this is the essential psychedelic album. Syd Barrett's career was short but so full of incredible songs and visionary style that it's hard to compare anything to him. Syd started with the usual blues rock basics (the pink floyd's first two demos- Lucy Leave and King Bee clearly show this.) At that time Syd was rhythm guitarist and singer. After Bob Close left the band, Syd took the band into new directions that no one ever could have imagined. Next came Arnold Layne and the See Emily play singles and then Piper at the Gates of Dawn. With this album it captures Syd's Pink Floyd at its best. Every song does indeed have a purpose but it's not very obvious unless you know a lot about Syd and his influences. Simply put it's the best pink floyd album in my opinion but I know I'm in a very small minority here. Also worth checking out is Syd's solo material (box set preferably) and the second Pink Floyd album.

Without Syd, there would be no Pink Floyd.
