Before Pink Floyd became a colossal rock band churning out one gargantuan epic after another, they were a psycehdelic band fronted by a crazy, erratic and creative lad named Syd Barrett. He wrote the majority of the songs,and his vision was an inevitable influence on the band, even after they achieved stardom. The band takes off on psychedelic tangents on Astronomy Domine, and interstellar Overdrive, but the sound of the band at this time is also very playful and somewhat puerile, on songs like the zany Bike, the Gnome, and Scarecrow. The band at this time also did some straightforward psychedelic rock on songs like Lucifer Sam. This album is great, but it sounds VERY different from Dark Sdie or any Floyd release since. When I first heard it, I wasn't convinced that it was a Pink Floyd album. Sadly this was Syd's only album with the band since his LSD addiction worsened his mental condition (I believe it was schizophrenia) to the point where he could not function in the band anymore. He was replaced by Dave Gilmour, but the essence that Syd gave o the band inspired them to achieve further success and explore their creativity to the fullest extent.
