The British psychedelic bands knew what to do with this genre,while American hippie bands bored us to tears with fairly regular country blues jam nonsense. The Floyd were cream of the crop and they created a mood, a bizarre one that defines psychedelia. Barrett's other worldly lyrics take you away to the far corners of a twisted mind on LSD, while the production is just amazing,beyond what The Beatles or anyone were doing at the time. It would have been nice to see how Syd would have developed as a mature songwriter,but maybe it's a good thing that his output was small,making it all the more special. I originally owned this as part of the two record set A Nice Pair,coupled with Saucerful Of Secrets. I played those records to death as a high schooler. The version of "Astronomy Domine on A Nice Pair was the live one from Ummagumma, not the original studio one contained here,which was an odd move. The remasters of Piper and Saucer are far better than the first CD versions issued in the 80's. If you still have those get on the ball and update. Piper is Floyd's best album and a celebration of the genius of one Roger Syd Barrett.
