...Here's what this li'l bird has to say. Ok, yeah, it's a great album. Definitely fits in quite well with their other stuff. Toby Mac did a great job on the production here, as far as arranging, but he also earns my only complaint against this album: the drums are terrible. The PLAYING is brilliant, this drummer knows his stuff, but Toby, please, can we HEAR them sometime. The snare tone is ok, the cymbals passable, but the kick and toms are absolutely piffle. I can understand going for a indie-sound: lo-fi, homegrown, etc. But this is hurting the music. Live, these guys are SOOOO heavy. But here they sound almost weak because of the drums. Mr McKeehan, take a tip from Aaron Sprinkle's production of FM Static and do better next time, k? Songwriting here is BRILLIANT! The more serious songs are in no way inferior. And for music theorists, check out the harmonies on the end of "Mood Rings", that's not simple 4-part we're talkin. Also, there's the great 6/8 and 4/4 changes on "I am understood", and I'm always big into bands that can show that adding a little math doesn't mean the song becomes inaccessable to the general public. many great songs here, cool hidden track, lots of depth to the words if you look. Lots of different sounds, different tempos, and a great title. My only reason for 4 stars out of 5 is the lack of heaviness-reproduction, live these guys pummel with the best of them. That's all i have to say about that! Peace!
