A Farewell To Kings

My personal favorite Rush album

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Even including Madrigal, which I personally think is a lousy song, this is probably my favorite album by Rush for the following reason: It seems to be the most restrained, with the most attention paid to songs, rather than instrumentation. Everyone who's familiar with Rush knows that these guys can play their instruments exceptionally well, and as a rule, their songs seem to show off their instrumental ability, but this album, the fiery playing is turned down a notch, and the songs seems to stand out the better for it. Many people cite "Closer to the Heart" as the most well known Rush song, and it's probably one of their simplest and most straight-forward. "Xanadu" is a great semi-epic, but it's also fairly straight-forward. Even Geddy Lee's helium-man vocals are turned down at tad (maybe the helium tank was running low...) It also doesn't have a whole lot of synthesizer stuff, just a touch here and there. Not to knock the synthesizer, but sometimes it can make their songs sound a little dated.
