A Farewell To Kings

Another masterpiece by Rush

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Following up on the success of their breakthough release 2112, Rush made A Farewell to Kings, which is in short one of the best prog rock albums ever. Although I slightly prefer 2112 over AFTK for sentimental reasons, the latter is much better musically, IMO.

It all starts off with the title track, a socially concious song that, every time I listen to it, makes me imagine that I'm back in the middle ages. The second track is a masterpiece within a masterpiece: Xanadu. Eclipsing 11 minutes, it is an excellent song that I can listen to again and again. Closer to the Heart follows, and could be described as the band's signature song. Played at virtually every live show, every Rush fan knows it's lyrics by heart. Following CTTH is Cinderella Man, which was penned by Geddy Lee, and is very enjoyable. Madrigal is a short but sweet, and very beautiful, track. Closing out the set is the album's second masterpiece: Cygnus X-1. With perhaps the most chilling introduction of all their tracks, Rush spins into a fury of music and screaming vocals that will give you goosebumps.

All of these tracks combined equal a great album and one of Rush's finest accomplishments.
