In the late 1970's a new (sub) genre begin to rise - New wave of British heavy metal - combining traditional hard rock with punkrock. You got a lot of young bands with energy and attitude. One of these bands were Saxon, and together with Judas Priest and Iron Maiden I'd say that they inspired many to follow. Saxon's "Denim & Leather" isn't just a milestone in the bands career but also a very important contribution to the development of heavy metal and the shaping of the group feeling among heavy metal fans. In the song "Denim and leather", Saxon are not only paying respect to their fans but also plays a major part in the forming of the metal community "...denim and leather, put us all together. It was you that set the spirit free". In "Never surrender", Saxon gave voice to those who weren't born with a silver spoon, and in the great "And the bands played on", Saxon even further let us know that we all belong together: fans and bands. This album is packed with great heavy metal songs and especially worth to mention is the excellent opener "Princess of the night".
