Denim And Leather

A milestone!!

Of all the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands who never made it big in American, Saxon were probably the most well-known among metal fans. It's a shame that they never gained the worldwide fame of Iron Maiden or Motorhead, really, but a listen to this album may indicate why: some of the lyrics can be seen as a direct link to Spinal Tap. (Think "Princess of the Night" is a love...song by looking at the title? Wrong - it's about a decommissioned steam train.) Peter "Biff" Byford has a very unique voice; I think he sounds kind of like Ian Gillan without the screaming. Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver are a guitar tandem to rival Tipton/Downing or even Murray/Smith. This probably isn't the best place to start with Saxon - I'd get "Wheels of Steel" first. But this one is an essential.
