The REAL Beginning of Death Metal
Review Score:

(10/10)
Yep, bar none. While Slayer, Death, and Possessed are good and are huge influences, you ever hear that low growl on ANY record in '84/85? Ever hear that insane detuned buzz of the guitars in '84/84? That double-bass, blast beat, and blinding rolls? Nope, nope, and nope. This IS the first death metal album (Well, IMO, and judging by the dates, yes).
The Band:
Max, rhythm guitar and vocals- Max is one of the reasons that this album was the first death metal record. His rhythms are insanely fast and crunchy, and, the biggest thing, his vocals are downright deep and scary. Most of his lyrics are pretty cool too.
Paulo, bass- Due to horrible production, Paulo is barely heard. But when he is, he sure sounds cool. And, don't forget, this guy is usin' his fingers to play those super fast death metal riffs.
Igor, drums- One of the coolest aspects of these albums is that you get to see how good Igor was even back in '85. This guy has always been one of my favorites, and these albums just boost my love for him. Not a lot of tribal percussion here though, so don't be looking forward to another 'Roots.' But still, though the production is bad, it gives Igor's drumkit a whole new sound.
Jairo, lead guitar- The reason Sepultura started making more thrashy albums (which are all great, and still have a big hint of death) is probably because of the departure of Jairo. While this guy isn't a super size pack of talent, his solos will put a smile on your face. Definately shredly.
Probably not a good starting place for growing 'tura fans, but a must buy sooner or later. And if you're lookin' for some good ol' death metal, this is the place to start. You know, it's funny, the fact that Max and Jairo's guitars are out of tune with each others makes one of the coolest things I've ever heard. No one should or will pull it off again though.
