Sepultura

Roots

razor sharp metal

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Developing on the tribal element which began with Chaos AD (another great one!) Sepultura take serious metal and introduce a hint of tribal drums to create an atmosphere which makes them even more distinctive. Max Cavalera is an outstanding vocalist and you can feel the passion behind his roaring vocals. `Roots Bloody Roots' is a monster of an opening track oozing power and aggression that make Sepultura who they are. `Ratamahatta' is quite a different track from the rest of the album, playing more heavily on the brazilian tribal style with some great drumming. I'm very keen on the tribal aspect that Sepultura have developed into, this is a fusion i'm much more enthusiatic about than the hip-hop/rap metal of today. As a keen fan of heavy metal I feel rap takes the edge away from serious rock, whereas the tribal drums purely add to the effect and don't tame Sepultura one bit. If you like it heavy and you like it distinctive make sure you give Sepultura a look in.

(Pity the use of vocalists Jonothan Davies(Korn) and Mike Patton(Faith No More, Mr Bungle) couldn't have been put to use in a better track.)
