Sex Pistols

Never Mind. The Bollocks ...

A Milestone

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
The very least one can say about the Sex Pistols is that Johnny Rotton has a powerful scream. He sings, if that is indeed the correct word, in a impossibly nasal, impeccably nasty, improbably tuneful snarl that works. Just from the first verse of "Holidays in the Sun", the first song on "Nevermind the Bullocks, Here's the Sex Pistols", you can see why this trashy, nihilistic, angry group was destined for a place in the annuls of pop culture. Just listen to snotty way Rotton spits out his words--"sunneh"; "belsunneh"; "historrrreyeh". It's plain to see that the Sex Pistols, actual talent aside, were re-creating rock to be the angry, vicious, violent, irrerverant force it is today.
The album, with the exception of the comparitave ballad "Submission", could be considered a one-note album, but that note is the soul of punk, and damn if the Pistols don't know all the intricacies of that note, from the disgust of "Bodies" to the rage of "God Save the Queen" to the pure sillyness of "Pretty Vacant".

Who could have guessed that mindless nihilism could be such fun?
