Talib Kweli

Beautiful Struggle

It's the T to the A-L-I-B the Deep Rooter

Beautiful struggle is the perfect name for the album. Talib Kweli is really struggling not to want to make an album full of beautiful songs like Around My Way (John Legend kills the hook). My favourite song at the moment & easily the best song on the album.

To those who think Kweli has sold out - you are wrong. Kweli is doing something he should have done a long time ago & that is trying to sell records. Kweli needs to do this, because I only ever heard of him from Jay-Z. He has definitely took the right step towards promoting his music & becoming commercial enough to prove to the world that he is the best lyricist in the universe & upper echelons dead or alive.

Yes, I am one of those so-called people who listen to the Commercial Hip-Pop. I listen to the Snoop Doggs, Jay-Z, The Eminems, Chingys, hell the day Straight Outta Cashville came out, I copped it. That is what I call my fun Hip-Hop - I listen to it to have a laugh, have fun. Then I bump & bit of Nas, Mos Def, Royce Da 5 9 or Talib if I want to listen to real hip hop lyricism.

Anyway, probably 8 out of 13 standout tracks for me (pretty good strike rate), A couple of those Hi-Tek tracks aren't that great (man Hi-Teks overrated), I Try, We Know or Around My Way could have given Talib commercial success in my opinion. However, I'm thinking We Know would probably have been best choice. Ghetto Show is a lyrical feast, featuring Common, as is Beautiful Struggle the final track. Never been in Love is Just Blazes signature production at its best. Going Hard is good, but I was hoping this would be a little more like rush of the Quality album. Black Girl Pain is also a nice track with a catchy hook & good message.

The only complaints I have is that the Neptunes track was a bit weak. (Something more like Hot Sauce To Go off Jadakiss's album would have been better) No Super MC Collaboration is very disappointing? Remember the one with Common & Mos Def on Black Star, the one with Rah Digga & XZibit on Reflection & the one with Black Though & Phaoroe Monch on Quality. I would love to see a BK Kings Kweli / Nas & The King Of Detroit Royce Da 5 9 Collab. Now that'd be awesome. The third best Hip-Hop album of 2004 behind College Dropout (Kanye West) & Death Is Certain (Royce Nickel Nine)

It's better than anything on the radio anyways.

The newest Talib is different to say the least. It's hard to like this newest album knowing how incredible his past albums were. Talib has s [ ... read complete review ]
