Intelligent and insightful, thoughtful and thought provoking. Those qualities make this album a bonafied hip-hop jewel. Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek provide a richly textured manifesto of their creative energies (political, cultural and spiritual) via "Train of Thought". This project is one of the most satisfying treats to hit the streets in quite a while. Talib's lyrical dexterity (both in style and content) is remarkable because he drops lines with such conviction and confidence. From his more relaxed, philosophical side ("Memories Live" and "Love Language")to his all out B-Boy manifestation ("Move Somethin" and "Down For The Count), Talib manages to hook your consciousness in with his wit and substance. Hi-Tek's production is surprisingly diverse. He's able to create the right mood and sound for each cut, reaching both your mind and spine in the process. One of my favorite cuts on this album is a Hi-Tek instrumental ("Love Speakeasy") with its riveting bass-line and jazzy sax hovering above. The material presented here is not for short attention spans. It's far from the lowest common denominator hip-hop being force fed to the public these days. It's something you can feel. Get your tickets and hop on. All aboard folks...
