This is easily the finest Black Crowes' record since Shake Your Money Maker! The band just sounds like it's had a complete blood transfusion (soul tranfusion?) and the songs are rockin' and funky and vital again. Beginning as early back as Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, The Crowes have had a tendency to slip into somewhat spacey and (frequently) tedious mid-tempo stuff...there is absolutely none of that here--the songwriting is more accomplished than ever and the playing is downright fierce. By Your Side is a worthy addition to any serious rock'n'roll collection.
