I'm a jaded Aussie music/film reviewer. And I say: thank god for the Black Crowes! Forget the SmallFaces/Stones comparisons. Those groups should be so lucky to produce an album this wonderful. The writing is equal to the Crowes' best: a substantial improvement over 'Three Snakes and One Charm (1996)' and even over 'Amorica (1994)'. The production has all the crispness and warmth of "The Southern Musical and Harmony Companion" (1992). And the performances are more enthusiastic than even those on their debut 'Shake Your Money Maker' (1990). The slightly daffy lyrics on track 6 ('Heavy') reduce this listener's rating to 4.5 stars. But given Amazon's rating system requires us to choose between 4 and 5, there's no doubt: 5 out of 5! If ya can't find something to love on 'By Your Side', you don't like music.
