Jimmy Page playing subpar can still play rings around a lot of other guitar players, and he's anything BUT subpar on this terrific live CD. I managed to go through most of the 90s almost completely oblivious to the Black Crowes, so I didn't really know what to expect, though I hoped Chris Robinson wasn't going to try and shamelessly copy Robert Plant the way David Coverdale did on his 1993 team-up with Page. Well, this pairing works great! The Led Zep covers may mostly stick to the originals, but they cook partly because Robinson sings his ... off without much more than a cursory nod to Plant's stylizations. They also work because the rest of the band back the two frontmen to the hilt, and because these covers are counterbalanced by other covers, including great versions of B.B King's "Woke Up This Morning," the old Yardbirds/Jeff Beck cruncher, "Shapes Of Things," and, whodathunk, Peter Green's "Oh Well, Part 1." Of the Zep stuff, "Nobody's Fault But Mine," "In My Time Of Dying" and "Custard Pie" particularly stand out, but everything here has something that keeps you glued to the CD player. Try this; it's a smoker!
