The Black Crowes

Live At The Greek

It is a pleasure to see Jimmy Page playing again without the limitations imposed by the Page/Plant venture. We are spared Plant's now ruined voice and given a fair substitute in Chris Robinson. While old Led Zep fans will rejoice at hearing the full album arrangements of such songs as "Ten Years Gone By" brought to life on stage, they will also be painfully aware of the disc's shortcomings. Page's guitar disciples will note his dramatic fall even since the "Clarksdale" sessions. Some solos are just plain awkward with obviously missed notes or slipped bends as Page struggles to project the energy of the early seventies in his mid fifties. The Black Crowes push him on commendably with some great slide work by Rich Robinson and a solid rhythm section. Overall, this album is OK for the rabid fan, but be ready to feel a little let down if you expect the brilliant live work of Song Remains the Same's "No Quarter" or other spot on off the cuff soloing that made Page the God that he is today.
