OK But Not Great

I'll buy anything these guys put out without ever having heard it ... but when I saw the album I thought "oh no, they're trying to look like U2 on the cover - what does this mean for the music inside?". Unfortunately the contents of the album are fairly patchy, mixing some obvious attempts at singles with more ambitious stuff which pre-empts their mid 90's experimental sound. I suspect that the context of the album - trying to follow up the surprising commercial success of Starfish - meant that they tried to please themselves AND the record company and succeeded with neither. My overall feeling about the album is that it is largely forgettable and deserves a ranking towards the bottom of their excellent catalogue. Now if you want to hear a fantastic Church album buy the recently released Hologram of Baal ....
