U2

All That You Can't Leave Behind

They just might be the best band in the world

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
By the time this album was released, everyone knew how unpredictable U2 could be. They had already put out a couple of classic albums (Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby), a few experiments (Zooropa and Rattle and Hum), and a genuinely bad album or two (like Pop). What would the new album be?

It's one of the best rock albums ever. It tops The Joshua Tree (just barely) but doesn't quite top Achtung Baby. Lots of bands promise a return to form --- straightforward songs without a lot of songwriting help, studio tricks, or ironic detachment --- and on All That You Can't Leave Behind, the band fulfilled that promise.

The first half is relentlessly perfect. These are the kind of songs that inspire young musicians to form their own bands and take on the world. The second half is a little off-beat. New York has a quiet/loud dynamic, Peace on Earth is a sincere plea for a better world, and Grace closes the album with a gentle but passionate touch. U2 is still one of the best bands of all time. Just when you thought you could count them out, they came back to remind you why you love their music.

Disappointed

Yet another band has forgotten how to ROCK. Not a memorable tune in the bunch.
