Perhaps the most "commercial" album of U2's career, where the intention is clearly to make 'hits' rather than create innovative music. Not that this is a bad thing, but more often than not, U2 show their shortcomings in this realm of musicmaking. Just listen to "Wild Honey" and you'll know what I'm talking about - while it's an agreeable tune for the most part, Bono and his fellows are clearly uncomfortable performing it. Still, there are remnants of "U2-at-their-strongest" to be found here, particularly in "New York", which builds from a minimalistic murmur to a moving, sweeping climax.
