All That You Can't Leave Behind

Not Trite, And Hardly a "Worst Album"

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
Bono has talked about the paradox or contradiction of putting one's innermost thoughts onto a public address system, and I think it would be inappropriate at least--insulting at worst--to call any of U2's lyrics trite, as the reviewer below has ventured to say. When one realizes these are personal thoughts and feelings, they become anything but trite and embarrassing.

That said, the lyrics are indeed profound and do not take a backseat to other albums U2 has produced. The author(s') beliefs are unabashedly proclaimed and meditated upon in this album, moreso than others--something that, I think, is a result of the always maturing sensibilities of the band. And, while I personally do not enjoy the accompanying music as much as in the other albums, it does take new directions and is not stagnant.

All in all, "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is hardly a candidate for a "worst album" consideration.
