With ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND, Bono said that U2 were re-applying for the job of greatest rock n' roll band in the world. Looks like they passed the audition. In fact, post-9/11, this CD provided a healing soundtrack for a shattered nation, with its comforting and inspiring themes of spirituality, strength, and reconciliation. U2 was not only relevant again, but they were essential. Looking back over the past 20 years, it was becoming easy for me to believe that U2's best days might be behind them...with ZOOROPA, PASSENGERS, and POP, the band seemed to be wandering a bit. The brilliance of ACHTUNG BABY and JOSHUA TREE was beginning to seem like a distant dream...suddenly, U2 launched ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND, a masterpiece worthy to be mentioned alongside of their best work. Ditching much of the jaded cynicism and ironic stance they assumed over the previous decade, Bono, Edge, Adam, and Larry re-discovered the sheer joy of making amazing music. There's not a weak moment on this 50-minute set. "Beautiful Day" is power pop of the highest order. "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" is a fine Gospel-style song that sticks in your memory long after the CD has quit spinning. The band rocks hard on "Elevation," which crackles with life and energy. The inspirational "Walk On" also has a Gospel flavor, and may be the best song U2 has done since "Where the Streets Have No Name." U2 explores ambient art sounds with the lovely "Kite" and enjoy a Beatle-esque (at times Beach Boys-esque) jaunt through "Wild Honey." "Peace on Earth" is both hymn and heartcry, and "Grace" is a lovely benediction. Not since WAR has U2 been so consistently spiritual. Lyrically, Bono has never been better, and the band's economical playing actually results in a more powerful and lasting impact. Every song here is radio-friendly, though at the same time, miles away from most of the drivel currently receiving airtime. This CD is a primer on how to make masterful, meaningful music that transcends borders and generations. Pick it up, and don't put it down.

Good, but not a masterpiece
