When they first appeared on the international scene in the 80's, U2 became the biggest band in the world, a title many believe they still hold. Along with bands like The Police and The Cure, U2 delivered songs that could serve as radio friendly jams but also as deep, sometimes thought-provoking compositions. Their stuff still holds up precisely because it has what all great songs have, passion and spirit. "The Best Of 1980-1990" covers the band's first decade and is filled with classic cuts, wonderful moments and evocative music. Of course this is isn't ALL of the best the band produced in the 80's ("Bullet The Blue Sky" is missing) but it's a great refresher course. "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" is a deceptive love song, it may sound like a romantic tune, but when it talks about "Love" it's referring to things deeper than puppy love. "New Year's Day" is an evocative moment with a memorable piano section and a complete emotional feel. The driving "I Will Follow" is an example of the band's early days when they were heavily influenced by Punk artists such as Patti Smith and The Ramones but with a more glossy production. The more political anthems like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "The Unforgettable Fire" are here with their epic sweeps. And yet, the band could still churn out a good old fashioned love song like "With Or Without You" with it's beautiful melodies. U2 also has a wonderful taste for blues which is evident in rousing numbers like "Desire" and "When Love Comes To Town" featuring a roaring appearance by B.B. King. There is a new mix of "The Sweetest Thing" which feels now more focused and polished. Though U2 would go on to still make great albums in the 90's and into the 21st century and re-arrange their image once or twice, "The Best Of 1980-1990" is a great look at the band at their rawest most effective.
