I'm sorry. I'm a huge fan of U2's, but I still can't get myself to like this album. First of all, SO many glaring omissions from their early albums! I can understand if they feel "Gloria" is really dated, but hey, time tends to do that to songs. Nothing from "October" (unless you count the title track, buried as a hidden song), only one song from "Boy", and the versions they add here are not to my liking: the single versions. What is the point of adding "Where the Streets Have No Name" if you slay the majestic organ intro, quite possibly the greatest intro in recorded history?? "Bad" is also cut down here, as is "New Year's Day" (which I've never really liked).
The entire album is only 65 minutes long, which begets my first question of why not more songs? "A Sort of Homecoming"? "40"?? "MLK"? Where are these classics? I'm sure it's not because of time restraints that they are missing. My other major complaint is the abundance of "Rattle and Hum" tracks. I can understand "Desire", but "Angel of Harlem" - though pleasant - is fluff at best, and "When Love Comes to Town" - with BB King - does NOT belong here, no matter what anyone says. The saving grace is the rare B-sides, most of which showcase U2's growth throughout the decade. Could have been a much better collection, absolutely. It really reeks of commercial profit over creativity in selection.
