U2

BEST OF U2-1980-90

Excellent Mixture

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
I bought this album about a month ago now and since then I have never looked back. My version doesn't include the B-Sides but I still feel that this holds a high place amongst the rest of my CD collection. I have been a fan of U2 for a while now but really hadn't heard much of their stuff passed the obvious singles that they play on the Radio. Although I feel that When Love Comes To town is a unworthy entry in this collection (They could have maybe included Gloria or Bullet The Blue Sky) the rest of the album is pure class, except for I will Follow but I realise that they had to include something from Boy.
Heres a rundown
1. Pride (I The Name Of Love) - *** A distintive ring at the start but I feel that this song lacks some of the classic U2 atmosphere
2. New Years Day - **** A very moody piece that make me feel all types of emotion
3. With Or Without You - ***** The Greatest U2 song and one of my favourite all time songs. This song has a passion that U2 have yet the recreate to the same extent
4. Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - ***** Another Classic. Not as powerful as With Or Without You but still holds it own nevertheless
5.Sunday Bloody Sunday - ***** The landmark U2 protest. Bono displays all areas of his voice and the whole band pull it off in style
6. Bad - **** A song I hadn't heared before but was instantly smitten with. Bono voices crawls right into your heart when he lets loose on "I'm Wide Awake"
7. Where The Streets HAve No Name - **** Possibly U2's most popular song but I feel that it gets a little to repetitive. I love the intro however
8.I Will Follow - ** A disaster in my opinion. But they had to include something from Boy I guess
9. The Unforgettable Fire - *** Good atmosphere and feels almost Symphony Driven
10. The Sweetest Thing - **** A catchy number. Short and Sweet
11. Desire - *** Good but I dislike the chorus. Proberly had to be in this album for its reputation.
12. When Love Comes To Town - ** Whoever make the decision to record a single with BB King made a big mistake. Two clashing styles result in a mess. This one could have been dropped.
13. Angel Of Harlem - **** I love the horn parts and the whole song almost has a sort of christams feel to it.
14. All I Want Is You - ***** A hidden masterpiece. I didn't expect such a simple song to have such an affect on me. I could listen to this song for hours on end and wouldn't get tired of it. I'm not sure what it is about it but one day I'm sure I'll know.(Keep listening past the end of this one)

In a whole this album in a excellant investment for a diehard U2 fan or newcomer
