How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (HTDAAB)

U2's Best Album Since Achtung Baby!

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
U2's 11th studio album, is an attempt by the band to get back to their early 80's roots. Although the album is filled with guitar hooks and anthems it's definitely U2 circa 2004 and not U2 circa 1984. This is not a bad thing however. After all, the Joshua Tree was U2's attempt at Gospel music. They're not great at coping musical styles but it helps them to stretch in new directions.
The album has a similar sound as All That You Can't Leave Behind, however the band sounds more confident and assured. This is their most consistent and best effort since 1991's Achtung Baby. The album is filled with slow building anthem rockers. The best include "Vertigo 9/10*", "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 9/10*", "City of Blinding Lights 9/10*", "Love and Peace or Else 8/10*", "All Because of You 8/10*", "Crumbs from Your Table 8/10*", and "Original of the Species 8/10*".
This isn't U2's most inovative album but it's very solid! What more can you expect from a band that's been around as long as they have.
Somehow U2 continue to do it... I can't think of another rock band currently, or in the past, that have recorded an album of this quality after being together for more than 25 years. Can you?
