"Daring".."Best Yet".......Hardly.

If you are a fan of U2 you can appreciate what U2 was doing with "Pop", the statement the album was making, not only about the then current music scene, but about how the band has matured and aged. "Discotheque" starts the disk off well enough, and the techno element actually enhances the overall sound of the tune. I liked the techno elements found also on "Mofo" and "Playboy Mansion", but the rest of the album just doesn't hold up. "Angels" is just a very weak ballad, not even deserving space on the cd, "Miami" is just a mumbled mess that loses cohesion 30 seconds into the song. "Look into the Sun" is decent, but can't hold a candle to their earlier tunes. I just can't relate the band performing "Pop" to the same band that gave us "October" or "Boy", so many of the "new-music" elements have gotten in the way of what was once a simple, but very good rock band. I also get a kick out of people slamming the disk because it is a pop album....please "Joshua Tree" had almost as many hits a Michael Jackson's "Thriller", so U2 has already had a "pop" album. I just hope U2 will go back to their roots one day, and simply record some eye-opening, good rock n' roll.
