I really wansn't even a U2 fan until some friends dragged me to see them during their POPMART tour. I heard Gone, MOFO, Discoteche, and Staring at the Sun for the first time... I was blown away and instantly hooked. Surely these can't be the same guys that wrote "New Years Day," or, "One." While I liked some of U2's older stuff, this album caught me hook, line and sinker and I've been a fan ever since. "Gone" is like a sonic overture for the right side of your brain, and "MOFO" just reaks of sex appeal and suave. I know some U2 fans that would consider themselves "U2 purists" and rejected this album when it came out, and perhaps that is exactly what I love about it. U2 was able to turn their nose up at the critics and expand their musical abilites and horizons, and they did so with wreckless abandon on this album. It was easily one of the best written, performed and conceived albums of the 90's and is a tribute to every musical artist that has ever challenged themselves and their abilities by bucking the trend and trying something new and fresh.
