Essentially, U2 began as an optimistic, even naive group, spinning their Christianity into their poppy music. But their popularity and maturity led to some disillusionment, and a lot of their Christian fans felt betrayed by cynical albums like Zooropa, and episodes such as Bono's stripping in a London restaurant. With Pop, U2 regains their life-affirming perspective, but this time they bring some worldly wisdom with them. Both their lyrics and music reflect this development. However, this does not mean their old Christian fans should expect to play it in church--at least not normal churches.
Finally, it appears this will be their last good album. Their music since Pop (excepting the greatest hits and b-sides collection) belongs in nursery schools and self-help seminars.
Incidently, Moby's album Play reminds me of this in some ways.
