I am sick of people saying that POP fizzed, because it simply is one of their better albums. Yes, I love u2 to death, but I simply find this album better then the Joshua Tree, although it will never unseat Achtung Baby as the best album ever. This CD is NOT as techno as people say it is. Everything is guitar driven! So, let me tell you what I like about this CD:
the song If God would send his angels: One of my favorite U2 tracks. Another one that is up there is GONE: with its cosmic guitar sounds. This is edge at the stretch. Most people bash "Wake up dead man", but this is a brilliant piece of work as well, when most people call it average. It is intimate U2. Can you think of a time where U2 has used the word F***ed? It certainly is for emphasis. It is a modern psalm about the question of where is God in this world when I need him: In the same strain as "IF God would send.." Playboy mansion being the perfect song jabbing at the world's view of what perfection is. Lyrically this music rocks, and the music is beautiful and consistent. It is such a great CD. Most people tend to compare it to other U2 stuff, but compared to ANY other artists work, this piece rises to the top. It gets a bad rap some of the time, but this is U2 at their lyrically peak, along with Achtung Baby (ok, not quite like achtung but close). This song is pretty perfect in that it has everything. Highs, lows, soft songs, loud songs, intimate songs, love songs ("stuff of country songs") and a psalm for an ender.
IF you are a moderate U2 fan, to a fanatic and still don't have this album, you will be dissapointed you don't already have it. I havent even mentioned Staring at the Sun or Last night on Earth which you probably have heard. Those are solid songs, but just a scratch of the surface that is THIS BRILLIANT cd. Do your self a favour, because it definately is a smashing CD. Don't take my word for it either. Listen to the samples or look at other reviews. See for yourself
