The first cracks appear

(6/10)
This one starts with a burst of promise as "The Writer" is close to the UFO we've all come to know and love, only with some oddly placed brass to compliment (?) the guitar in the last verse and through to the fade. Despite this bit of distraction it would easily make any compilation collection of vintage UFO that I'd put together, and I love the reference to "Too Hot To Handle". ("Slip out the news or a piece of scandal/Don't toe the line 'cause nothing's too hot to handle.") "Back Into My Life" is a ballad, somewhat unusual but strangely effective. This is a great song, but I'd almost swear that those are the background singer that the Babys used on the Head First album. And is it me or is Phil doing a John Waite impression, and doing it well? After these three there isn't much to get excited about. "Let It Rain" is okay, but just barely, likewise "Feel It" and "Dreaming". The song that really keeps me shaking my head on this one is "Somethin' Else". Totally unlike anything they've done before with an oddly unpleasant, yet oddly familiar sax honking along. I wasn't sure what direction this was taking the band in at the time, but considering the middling efforts to come like Making Contact and Misdemeanor, I'd say it was a defective road map.
