Utopia

Ra

Fun and different.

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Ra is a refreshing change from typical 70s rock - like Rundgren's solo work, songs are mostly about fantasy and ethics, not typical 70s fare. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Utopia sends up bad theatre or wends its way through a legnthy (but fun) tale. On other tracks, the tone is more serious. A bit preachy, perhaps (Hiroshima)? Yes, but less so than much folk music from the same era, and certainly effective. Jealousy is the one standard 70s rocker - and it sounds nothing like Rundgren to me. It's the weakest song on the album, but the anger and frustration the song emotes are strong, and that's what the song is about.

Overall, a strong album from Utopia, and great vocals and harmonies from Rundgren and his peers.
