Good But Not Great

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
To be honest, I like, but have never been crazy about Van Hagar. Roth all the way! Anyhow, this album is a schitzophrenic mix of great tunes.First, the good stuff. "Seventh Seal" is a great rocker, with a killer riff that recalls "Poundcake". "Amsterdam" is one of the best tunes on the album despite it's utterly cheesy lyrics. It reminds me of something from "1984", with a fierce solo, one of Eddie's best in years. "Aftershock", and "Baletherium" are classic VH. "Can't Stop Loving You" is pure cheese. This is VH? "Don't Tell Me" is strong, but Sammy sounds like he's losing his voice trying to screech and scream. "Big Fat Money" is not great and Sammy sounds even worse on this. "Not Enough" is the worst song this band has ever recorded. "Feelin" rocks, but it doesn't sound like VH. It sounds like VH trying to do a sophistocated version of "Kashmiere". Eddie just can't write like he used to. Bring back Dave!
