The Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1 contains many (but not all of) of Van Halen's most popular songs--regardless, after a listen to this collection, you maybe hard-pressed to think of rock band that was more inspired.
Arguably the greatest rock & roll songwriters of their time period, Van Halen made music that has weathered quite well (remarkable when one considers how outdated most of the music from the early 1980s sounds today.) Their earliest music still holds up the best, (it sounds as though it were recorded yesterday,) but their newer work (the last three songs on the disc) also sound fantastic.
While not a fan of this particular genre, I can't help but wince through many of Van Halen's earnest, late-1980s synth ballads--these songs, while not terrible, have not aged well, (although the musicianship is truly impecible.)
In the minds of many, (myself included,) Van Halen is one of the five or ten greatest rock and roll bands of all time--a listen to this collection may leave you with the same impression.
