For years, I think Eddie has hated the fact that VH is considered to be a band that just writes songs about partying and skirt chasing. So, with Gary and the III CD, Ed believed he had finally hooked up with a singer that could write deep lyrics and move the band into a position to be hailed by critics. However, III was a complete disaster! The critics, who will NEVER respect VH, slammed it for trying to be soooo different. Then, the fans tore into it because it wasn't the 24 hour party that Roth and Hagar had provided before.
Is the CD terrible...no. Is it great, no not at all. Worth a listen from VH fans and rock fans alike? Absolutely! I've read many of the other reviews on this site and this CD is not as bad as most say. "Without You" is a solid rock song and one of my favorite VH tracks ever. "Dirty Water Dog" is a classic hard driving VH song that is just killer. And on "Fire in the Hole", Eddie sounds like he's strung his guitar with barbed wire and is playing through a guitar amp the size of a skyscraper! What a blistering track!!! Plus, Mike and Alex provide plenty of boom and Gary's vocals light that song up like dynamite. So, for people to say there is nothing redeamable about this CD is not true or fair to say. Sure, there's plenty to skip over but it's still worth a listen. I just hope the rumors are true that Hagar is coming back. I thought Hagar was the best thing to ever happen to VH. 5150 is my favorite album, it just overflows with such power and soul! I just hope Hagar can bring that magic back to my favorite band of all time!!!!!
