When I was younger, I did generally enjoy Guns `n Roses songs, but wasn't a die-hard. Aside from some from songs from their debut album, I never considered myself a Stone Temple Pilots fan. Nonetheless, when I heard about this super-group, I was immediately intrigued and purchased the album soon after it was released. There aren't too many good rock albums out these days. Fortunately, we now have Velvet Revolver.

Given the band members' respective histories with GNR and STP, comparisons are inevitable. Elements of GNR, in particular, seem to be present, but overall the songs are probably a bit less melodic. I've heard the album described as unimaginative or uninspired, but while I do acknowledge that the wheel was not re-invented here, nevertheless what the band did was come up with a very solid rock `n roll album that I can blast in my stereo or in my truck.

The first two tracks (Sucker Train Blues & Do it for the Kids) get the album off to a rockin' start. Indeed, the leadoff tune is one of my favorites from the album. I'm not a big fan of Big Machine, but it's followed by a couple more tracks (Illegal I Song & Spectacle) that really cook. Fall to Pieces has received a lot of radio play where I live, and it's a pretty catchy tune. The GNR guitar element is clearly present in that song, and very pleasing. Headspace is another rockin' tune. Not so much a fan of Superhuman, but Set Me Free is a little bit better. You Got No Right is nice tune, offering a change of pace, with a slower start. But it soon picks up a little later into the song, providing a satisfying listen. Slither is the first single from the album, and a solid song. I seem to have heard it many times over now, but it's still a great rock song and a highlight of the album. Dirty Little Thing isn't anything to get particularly excited about, but I do enjoy Loving the Alien-a slower tune which concludes the album.

Perhaps 4 stars is a bit generous (as it may only deserve 3.5 or so), but there hasn't been a whole lot of good music like this out, and at the end of the day the album delivers.

Much better than I thought

As a big STP fan and a not so big GNR fan I was a little hesitant to get this album. I've heard Set Me Free on the radio for about a year n [ ... read complete review ]
