Velvet Revolver

Contraband

NOT groundbreaking, NOTHING good is on this album

Sideprojects, super groups, whatever you want to call them. They occur when:

A) Band members get pissy and leave original band and start a new one with members of other bands who did it to.

B) Band members are stuck in contract with original band, are bored, so they go start a new band with either members from A or B.

C) Who knows.

Well, bands like these have been big lately. Well, Maynard James Keenan and Billy Howerdell have created some nice stuff with A Perfect Circle for us to listen to until the next Tool album. The breakups of Ultraspank and Snot, along with the drummer from Godsmack have us Lo-Pro, a supprisingly good nu-metal band. And of course, Foo Fighters have been in this same vein for the past decade. And Zwan, Billy Corgan's band, started and quitted within a very short time. Still a good album, though. Anyways, we come to Velvet Revolver. Obviously everyone knows it's basically Guns 'n Roses with Scott Wieland from STP doing vocals. By no means is VR even close to touching the former bands of these members.

Velvet Revolver is radio sluge. These washed-up rockers from a past era are maybe trying to pocket some cash, so they release this album. The lyrics are obviously trying to be "deep" in some way early on in the album, but then they just give up by "Fall to Pieces" and leave us with lyrical trainwrecks like "Headspace" and "Dirty Little Thing".

The music isn't half bad, if it wasn't revolving around the post-grunge garage theme going on. Why join a genre that sucks? Well, instead of creating new music like GnR did in the 80s, VR is submitting to current trends and appealing to the radio-rock teen with 15$ in his pocket. These guys should know better.

And now the vocals...ugh. Scott was obviously way better in his STP era. In VR, he sounds like he's killing himself to hit that note. This is a disgrace to his insane talent he had in STP.

Overall: .000000001/100

Velvet Revolver sucks. Go listen to Atomship's "Crash of 47", anything that Maynard James Keenan has touched, all the Deftones albums, and dredg's "El Cielo" and "Leitmotif" if you want GOOD, REAL music. Music that's not written by washed up 80's and 90's rockers wishing for a comeback.

This album doesn't blaspheme Guns n' Roses or Stone Temple Pilots in my opinion, but I'm not infatuated with either band so that isn't sayin [ ... read complete review ]
