I wasn't overly impressed with Venom's "Cast In Stone" comeback effort. Too many Hetfield impressions from Cronos, and the bonus disc of old tunes only served to draw attention to the relative inferiority of the new material. That said, there were 3 or 4 impresssive new cuts and, most impressive of all, the original trio was back together! Unfortunately, the same can't be said for "Resurrection". Venom have released their first album without Abaddon on drums. The lame cover art, crummy digitized logo (when will Venom realize that their coolest logo is the 'rounded' one from "Black Metal" and "Possessed"?), and microscopic band photo (obviously to mask Abaddon's absence) all serve to produce an underwhelmed response from the listener. To my ears, the best effort of recent years from the Venom camp is Cronos's "Venom" solo album, which features Cronos (obviously) and members of Cathedral and Carcass ripping through old Venom tunes and stellar Cronos band originals. In fact, before the Venom reunion, the Cronos band was supposed to follow this release with another album, the proposed title of which I've forgotten. I wonder what became of it?
