I have to admit, this is not my type of music. I prefer music that is harder edged than Vonda Shepard. I loathed the tv series "Ally McBeal". The show was annoying from the beginning all the way to the end. Unfortunately couldn't resist Vonda Shepard's duet with Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow" so I bought a used copy of the second soundtrack from the vomit-inducing television series. Vonda does have a pleasant enough voice to sit through ten songs to get to the one song I really like. Vonda has a bluesy quality in her voice. Most of the songs on the cd were pretty tolerable. I did enjoy the gospel-influenced "Sweet Inspiration" and the gorgeous Roy Orbison ballad "Crying". Unfortunately I thought Vonda's interpretation of Don McLean's "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" was insipid. I didn't like the original version to begin with so no improvement could be ever made on this song. "What Becomes (of the Brokenhearted)" makes up for the song. I actually like Vonda's version. As for my personal favorite song on the cd "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow", I loved the heartfelt lyrics and the melodies were just so darn catchy. It is hard not to have this song stuck inside your head. Overall I do like this cd. It isn't a bad cd but not what I consider to be as good as say as a Tori Amos cd. I consider "Heart and Soul" a guilty pleasure of mine.
