Setting out to recapture her waning R&B audience, Houston decides to go hip-hop, with horrific results. "My Love Is Your Love" is an experiment in trying to sound "hip" gone terribly wrong.
Most of this CD is very trendy. Houston sounds like she's just going through the motions on "Heartbreak Hotel", her duet with Kelly Price and Faith Evans. Her boring collaberation with Wyclef on the title track is a downright embarrassment. Most of the songs just seem out of place on a Whitney album. They sound like songs R. Kelly would write for one of his croonies. Her attempt at Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made To Love Him" is a joke! Check out a much better cover on Chaka Khan's "Chaka" CD. It's obvious this is who Whitney was trying to imitate but she fails miserably.
It's only when Houston is not trying to sound trendy is really when she shines. "I Learned From the Best" is a great Soul song. Houston sounds like she is really enjoying herself on this cut. Even "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" finds Whitney more believeable and sounding like she is actually enjoying herself (the 'smooth' version on the maxi single is much better than the album version).
This CD was recorded around the time Houston began to experience some "personal" problems, which may explain her rather erratic vocal performance on this album.
Hopefully, by the time the next album drops, Houston will have gotten her act together and she will once again bless us with some decent music and let the trendiness go.
